Tax relief in sight — key lawmakers help lead the way

Congress is one step closer to saving thousands of dollars for millions of hardworking Americans like you.

The House of Representatives voted to approve the Senate’s budget resolution. This is a crucial step toward extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts, preventing a tax increase that would hit 6 in 10 Americans, cost hundreds of thousands of jobs, and saddle the average family with $1,500 more in taxes every year.

But there’s still a long way to go.

Now, the Senate and the House need to hammer out details to draft a bill to extend the tax cuts that both chambers can agree on. With slim majorities in the House and the Senate, this won’t be easy.

After all, the House passed the resolution by just two votes.

At Americans for Prosperity, we’re not taking o ur eye off the ball. We’re mobilizing our nationwide grassroots army to make sure Washington protects your prosperity by extending the 2017 tax cuts.

WHAT HAPPENED AND WHERE ARE WE?

The House took a major step to protect your bottom line.

Here’s why:

  • Under budget reconciliation, extending the tax cuts would take only 50 votes (plus the vice president), rather than the traditional 60-vote threshold.
  • After weeks of intense debate and negotiations, the House and Senate have agreed on a budget resolution — the first major hurdle in the reconciliation process.
  • Now, both chambers need to turn that resolution into a bill that locks in the 2017 tax cuts, passes both the House and Senate, and makes its way to the president’s desk.

Based on how we got here, expect intense negotiations and very tight votes in the House and the Senate in the coming months.

We need to remain vigilant. There’s still a real risk that Congress will sleepwalk to the biggest tax hike in recent history.
