Extending the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is the most consequential policy battle of 2025.
Emily Seidel, president and CEO of Americans for Prosperity, recently appeared on the “Going Big! Podcast” with Kevin Gentry, founder of TenX Strategies, to discuss extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts and the need for Congress to get it done sooner rather than later.
These tax cuts saved countless American families thousands of dollars, giving them a fighting chance to achieve their version of the American Dream.
But they’re scheduled to expire at the end of the year.
If Congress allows the tax cuts to expire, the consequences could be devastating. It would result in a $4 trillion tax hike over the next decade.
And that might not be the worst of it.
If pro-growth provisions in the TCJA expire, businesses will be hit with higher costs — slowing the economy, stalling job creation, and even leading to job losses.
We’re talking 134,000+ jobs in California, 74,000+ in Texas, and 26,000+ in Ohio.

Think about what that’d mean for business owners, workers, and families across the country.
Factory floors going quiet as growth grinds to a halt
Small businesses scaling back operations or shutting their doors entirely because they can’t afford to stay open
Families forced to stretch already tight budgets as they lose their livelihoods — and face rising taxes at the same time
The danger of overconfidence
Many people believe extending the 2017 tax cuts will be easy because Republicans control all three branches of government.
Emily stressed that Republicans had a much larger majority in 2017, yet the bill still died twice before it was ultimately signed into law. Smaller majorities mean a smaller margin for error.
For businesses, certainty on tax policy is crucial, especially at a time when the broader policy and economic environment is so unsettled. The longer the threat of tax hikes looms, the longer it takes for job creators to invest and for Americans to ultimately feel the benefits of a growing economy ahead of the midterms.
And if we fail in this task, it’ll stall momentum on other key priorities like regulatory reform.
But if we succeed, we’ll head into the midterms with economic growth — and momentum.
The stakes are too high for inaction.
Here’s the truth: Politics isn’t controlled by immovable forces
Emily knows something about how policy is driven in Washington. As a 22-year-old recent college graduate, she had the opportunity to work on Capitol Hill and learn about the greatest challenges facing our country. And for more than a decade, she saw the power of grassroots in action firsthand.
From answering constituent calls to working directly with key lawmakers, Emily learned that the real power isn’t in the halls of Congress — the real power is in the hands of the people.
Emily believes in the power of your voice, and she brought that belief to AFP. Our mission is to amplify it — and help you drive meaningful change that affects your family, your community, and your future.
Reach out to your lawmakers now. By contacting your representatives, you can urge them to act now to preserve the full benefits of the 2017 tax cuts.
