Poll: Americans say no to tax hikes, yes to Trump tax cut
The vast majority of Americans agree: Congress must renew the 2017 Trump tax cuts.
That’s the key finding of the latest Americans for Prosperity poll , which shows overwhelming support for renewing the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act while reducing the federal deficit through responsible spending cuts.
According to Public Opinion Strategies, which conducted the survey, “Any member of Congress who chooses to vote against extending these tax cuts would be placing themselves in political peril.”
They can’t say they haven’t been warned!
And that is precisely one reason AFP commissioned the poll. We wanted to make sure that everyone in Congress understands what is at stake for the country and their political future.
It’s a simple message: If you take away our tax cuts, the voters will hold you accountable.
The poll’s timing was also no accident. It was conducted to be released when it could have the biggest impact on the policy fights to come. And it’s making waves. It was featured in the New York Post, the Washington Times, and Breitbart .
It’s just another way AFP shapes the debate instead of reacting to it.
Make no mistake, these poll results are a strong call to action.
Even though D.C. is divided along party lines, hardworking Americans on Main Street are united. They don’t want to pay more so Washington can spend more.
This is a moment for lawmakers in both chambers to listen to everyday Americans — or suffer the consequences.
Here’s what our polling found.
VOTERS SAY: HANDS OFF OUR PAYCHECKS
American voters are just starting to recover from high inflation and the disastrous economic policies of the Biden administration. And they recognize how harmful higher taxes would be.
- 8 in 10 Americans think this isn’t a good time to raise taxes.
- An overwhelming 84% of American voters think Congress should keep the current tax rates — even 74% of Democrats agree!
- Almost 3 in 4 Americans think allowing the Trump tax cuts to expire would hurt middle-class Americans and mom-and-pop businesses the most.
- 85% of voters want Congress to act ASAP to renew the tax cuts.
Americans know that a tax hike ($1,500 a year for the average family) would be disastrous for their family budget. Congress should listen to them!

EXTENDING THE TRUMP TAX CUTS: A POLITICAL WINNER
If the economic argument fails, maybe members of Congress will be convinced by the political argument. Extending the 2017 cuts is a clear political winner, not just with Republican voters but also with the swing voters who will be pivotal in the 2026 midterm elections.
- Voters are increasingly aware that the tax cuts expire at the end of 2025, up from 40% in September 2024 to 58% today.
- Some 63% of American voters are more willing to vote for a lawmaker who votes to extend the Trump tax cuts.
- This includes majorities of key swing groups such as independents (59% more likely), seniors (67% more likely), moderates (61% more likely), and suburban voters (65% more likely).
- 60% of voters say that if the Trump tax cuts are allowed to expire, they will consider it the same as their member of Congress voting to increase taxes.
Our polling confirms that saving the 2017 Trump tax cuts is both the right thing to do and a political winner.
