Washington Post: Conservative Group Starts $20 Million Effort to Renew Trump Tax Cuts

The conservative group Americans for Prosperity announced Monday it is launching a $20 million campaign to support one of President-elect Donald Trump’s biggest priorities once he takes office in a week: renewing his 2017 tax cuts.

The group’s Protect Prosperity campaign is expected to target voters in all 50 states with advertising, phone calls and door-knocking, urging them to tell their lawmakers to support the extension of the cuts. The group promised in a news release that it would “elevate the voices of Members of Congress supportive of pro-growth tax cuts and hold accountable Members who do not support this agenda.”

The organization also said it would hold more than 1,000 meetings with congressional offices in Washington and conduct in-district events to pressure lawmakers to save the cuts.

Trump signed the $1.5 trillion tax overhaul into law during his first term in 2017. Many of the cuts are set to expire at the end of 2025 unless Congress takes action, and while Republicans agree that renewing them is a priority, they are debating how quickly to tackle them along with Trump’s other agenda items.

“If there’s one thing that unites virtually every American, it’s that Washington shouldn’t be raising anyone’s taxes,” AFP’s vice president of government affairs, Akash Chougule, said in the news release. “We are urging Congress to act decisively before President Trump’s tax cuts expire and result in crippling tax increases for millions of families.”
